At this time of year it is more important than ever to have the requisite knowledge to look after yourself when venturing out into the hills:

few would argue that navigation is the most essential skill to master.

This one day course will introduce you to the fundamentals of navigation, including:

– use of a compass to orientate a map, measure distance and take bearings
– use of different map scales 1:25,000 1:50,000 and 1:40,000
– feature and contour interpretation
– use of grid references to identify your location
– understanding of timing and its role in navigation
– measuring distance on the map and in real life
– planning and following a suitable route itinerary

We will meet at Pendreich Carpark FK9 4LS to introduce the day and some brief navigational theory at the foot of the Ochils. From here we can head straight out onto the hill to delve into the practical aspects.

This is a predominantly outdoor, practical day. Please dress and equip yourself for a day on the hills and bring any food and drink you may need. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact me in advance.

Please bring a suitable compass of a type similar to a Silva type 4 marked with degrees, as well as a waterproof map case. We will provide relevant maps if you do not have your own.
